The Origin

A vital distinction in the philosophy of science, introduced by Karl Popper as the direct antidote to Confirmation.

The Definition

Corroboration is the status of a theory, hypothesis, or strategy that has survived rigorous, genuine attempts to prove it false.

Popper famously argued that you can never "confirm" that a theory is 100% true, because you can never observe every single data point in the universe. (Finding 10,000 white swans does not confirm that all swans are white).

Therefore, "Confirmation" is logically impossible and intellectually lazy. Instead, scientists and leaders must seek Corroboration. A highly corroborated theory isn't perfectly "true", it is simply the toughest, most battle-tested idea we currently possess. It is the idea that we have tried our absolute hardest to destroy, but which has stubbornly refused to break.

The Corporate Application

In the corporate world, executives waste millions of dollars seeking "confirmation." They hire consultants to validate their assumptions and run focus groups designed to agree with them.

1. Cheap Confirmation vs. Expensive Corroboration Confirmation is cheap. If you want to believe your new marketing strategy is brilliant, your brain (and your sycophantic middle managers) will easily find three data points to confirm it. Corroboration is expensive, painful, and requires intellectual honesty. To achieve corroboration, you must actively hand your strategy to a "Murder Board" and incentivize them to find the fatal flaw.

2. The Corroborated Product When a tech team launches a product, it is just a hypothesis. If it crashes on day one, the hypothesis is falsified. If it handles the traffic, scales beautifully, and users actually pay for it, the product is corroborated. You haven't proven it will work forever, but it has survived contact with reality today.

The Chief Wise Officer's Rule: Stop asking your team, "Do we have data to confirm this will work?" Start asking, "How hard did you try to break this idea, and exactly how did it survive?" You do not want a confirmed strategy; you want a highly corroborated one.
